Social Media and the Olympics

The last summer Olympic Games occurred in 2008, when I was only 15 years old. At that point in time, Facebook had been around for 4 years and Twitter was only 2 years old. In other words, social media was relatively new back in 2008. So this caused me to think about how this year’s Olympic Games will be much different because of the impact social media has on our culture.

NBC will spend 2 billion dollars to ensure that every event of the Olympics gets to be streamed live either online or on TV. One night of US Olympic trials caused an outpour of tweets that surpassed the amount of tweets made during the entirety of the 2008 Games. NBC plans to incorporate social media content from Facebook and Twitter onto the streaming of the games. By doing this, they can tailor to whatever users want to see.

NBC will know when users are watching by the amount of produced social media content. This will help advertising in the future. In a nutshell, this year’s Olympic Games will be new, and we should not expect future Olympic Games and all sporting events, for that matter, to be the same.
